What do you put down a farm lane that turns to gumbo every March? Iowa Rock Supply brings bulk gravel and aggregate delivery across Iowa, and the answer starts with Class A roadstone.
It is crushed limestone with the fines left in, so it binds and compacts into a base that stands up to spring snowmelt sitting on ground that is still frozen.

Materials Delivered Across Iowa
Class A roadstone is the standard Iowa base course.
11. County engineers and city entrance standards call the same material roadstone.
Use Class A Roadstone under driveways, parking pads, shed bases and farm lanes. Where a lane carries heavy equipment or a soft spot needs rebuilding, 1 Inch Roadstone is the coarser grade, laid under a finer surface course.
Washed, open graded stone moves water instead of holding it. Clean Rock goes in subdrains, drainage tile backfill, pipe bedding and behind retaining walls.
3/4" Crushed Stone suits drive surfacing where a loose, free draining stone is wanted, plus trench backfill.
Limestone Screenings bed pavers and flagstone, fill joints and top dress a compacted roadstone base. 3/8" Crushed Stone is what Iowa quarries sell as washed chips, for seal coat aggregate and paver joints.
Riprap, also called revetment stone, armors stream banks, culvert outlets and pond edges against spring runoff. River Rock and Large River Rock are rounded gravel washed out of the Missouri and Mississippi valleys, for decorative beds and dry creek beds.
For walkways and play areas, 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel is the size Iowa calls Natural Pea Gravel. Mason Sand mixes brick and block mortar, and Washed Sand beds and levels under slabs and pavers.
Ground work runs on soil too. Top Soil is screened black dirt for lawn repair and bed prep, Fill Dirt raises grade before a roadstone course goes down, and Garden Soil is blended richer for raised beds.
Ground and Climate Across Iowa
Base, drive and paver work runs from the spring thaw through to late fall. Frozen ground stops compaction in winter, and the weeks when frost is coming out leave lanes and gravel drives soft.
Time a delivery around that window.
Frost goes deep across Iowa. The residential code leaves the frost line depth to each jurisdiction, and 42 inches is the figure Iowa building departments commonly publish.
Confirm the local number before setting footings, because northern Iowa can be asked for more.
The Des Moines Lobe is the youngest glacial ground in the state: thick, compact pebbly loam till 45 to 60 feet deep, with sand and gravel along old meltwater channels. Flat, tight pothole ground there holds water, so drainage matters as much as base.
The Northwest Iowa Plains sit under a loess mantle that thins from about 16 feet in Plymouth County to about 4 feet toward the northeast, giving long, even slopes. Sioux quartzite bedrock comes to the surface in the far northwest corner.
The Iowan Surface is loamy glacial till planed down by cold-climate erosion, with a thin, patchy loess cover and a pebble band near the surface. Limestone bedrock is shallow along the eastern edge.
The Driftless Area of northeast Iowa, the Paleozoic Plateau, is thin soil over limestone, dolomite, sandstone and shale, with bedrock shallow on the ridgetops. The Southern Iowa Drift Plain is old till under loess 5 to 30 feet thick, with the Yarmouth-Sangamon paleosol, a gummy grey clay that water will not move through.
The Loess Hills and the Missouri River valley carry wind blown silt more than 60 feet deep, and 150 to 200 feet in places, with sandy river bottom west of the bluff line. The Mississippi River corridor is sand, gravel, silt and clay on terraces and floodplain, with sandy blow ground on the older terraces.
Sheet and gully erosion on loess and rolling till ground, stream bank scour after heavy rain, and bank cutting along the Missouri and the Mississippi all point to the same materials: roadstone for a compacted base, riprap for armoring, clean rock where water has to move.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about gravel and aggregate delivery in Iowa
What is the best base material for a patio in Iowa?
Class A roadstone is the base for a patio here. It is crushed limestone with the fines left in, so it binds and compacts. Limestone screenings then bed the pavers or flagstone on top, and Washed Sand levels under slabs.
Can I order material for a commercial or contractor job?
Yes. Order online by the ton or by the yard, and the calculator on each product page sizes the load. Class A roadstone, clean rock, riprap and washed chips all cover commercial work, from parking pads to subdrain and bank armoring. Pick a delivery date at checkout.
When is the best time of year to order base material in Iowa?
Base, drive and paver work runs from the spring thaw through to late fall, because frozen ground stops compaction in winter. The weeks when frost is coming out leave lanes and drives soft, so plan around them. Order once the ground has firmed up and the season is open.
